Air Abrasion

Air abrasion is a way to treat small, early cavities without a dental drill. A fine, controlled stream of particles gently wears away decayed enamel, and because there's no vibration or heat buildup, many patients don't need anesthetic at all. At Cedar Creek Dental, this option is available for the kinds of early lesions where a conservative approach makes sense.

How It Works

  • Particle Stream — A precise jet removes softened, decayed tooth structure while leaving healthy enamel largely untouched.
  • No Drill, No Vibration — Without a rotating bur, the sound and sensation patients often associate with fillings are avoided.
  • Minimal or No Anesthetic — Because the process is gentle, numbing is usually unnecessary for smaller areas.

When It's Used

  • Early Cavities — Best suited to shallow decay caught before it spreads deeper into the tooth.
  • Prepping for Sealants or Bonding — Can clean a surface before a sealant or small bonded restoration is placed.

Dr. Phil Han, DMD, evaluates each tooth to determine whether air abrasion or another conservative treatment, such as the Icon procedure for white spot lesions, is the better fit.
